State Senator Michael Connelly (R-Naperville) releases the following statement in opposition to Senate Bill 1, which passed both chambers on May 31:
“It is disappointing and frankly, disturbing that yet again the Senate Majority voted to give Chicago Public Schools another bailout. It is outrageous that perhaps the most valuable property in the state of Illinois—Chicago’s business district, is excluded from the local resources included in the school funding formula.
“The City of Chicago diverts hundreds of millions of dollars away from their public schools in TIF districts. It is especially unfair to the poorest districts in the state who have to essentially backfill the hundreds of millions of dollars diverted from the funding formula. There is no other appropriate description to this legislation than to call it a CPS bailout.”
